Maybe it was because of the Jack Rose Relays next door driving away the fans. Or it was the excitement of the resurging men's volleyball team midway through their season. Or just the inenviable reputation of suffering one of the most one-sided shutouts in the history of the program.
Whatever reason for Long Beach State's rugby program losing the intensity to win rugby matches, it was left to the home fans to figure out as UC Santa Barbara inched closer to wrapping one of the two Southern California spots in the National Tournament with a 46-7 victory over the 49ers in a warm St. Patrick's Day weekend at the CSULB Rugby Field.
Jay Castro scored the lone try for the Beach (8-10, 1-7 SCRFU), while Robert Hughes converted the try, in the 71st minute.
Beach Rugby will complete their 2006-07 rugby season on the road against the San Diego State Aztecs. Kickoff if set for 12:00 p.m. on March 24, in San Diego, CA.
Long Beach State's rugby team, coaches, players and staf thank you for your support during the 2006-07 season.
