At least the Long Beach State 49ers can take consolation that it was not the 135-0 mockery of a contest from last year at San Luis Obispo.
But one could wonder if the defending SCRFU University Division I champion Cal Poly Mustangs were going to give the country problems, using a balanced attack of speed, agility and rugby savvy. The outcome was not going to be in doubt, as Cal Poly rolled to a 61-5 win over the 49ers at the CSULB Rugby Field.
With the defeat, Long Beach State fell to 6-8 (3-4 SCRFU, 16 pts) for the year. The Beach continues its season traveling up the road to face UC Santa Barbara next Saturday, March 15. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Santa Barbara.
