Cal Poly makes farce of the game in 135-0 one-sided run-up against the Beach

It was already obvious that Cal State Long Beach was going through a down year in their rugby season heading into what was a suicide mission up the road in San Luis Obispo to take on the host Mustangs from Cal Poly.
By the end of the match, the outcome couldn’t be any clearer for those who saw it, but couldn’t believe it. It was, as one would say, in the league of the Harlem Globetrotters vs. Washington Generals, or Australia’s 31-0 drubbing of American Samoa in soccer, or Arbroath’s 36-0 demolition of Bon Accord in the Scottish Cup more than a century ago.
The final score read Cal Poly 135, Long Beach State 0, and it might as well be a fact that the locals wondered if the hosts broke even the faintest hint of a sweat in the one-sided running up of the score.
One thing was certain; it was a complete change of performance from the previous match in the kickoff tournament, which was a 17-10 Cal Poly victory last fall.
With the loss, Cal Poly improves to 6-1, and on the verge of wrapping up one of the two berths in the National Tournament later this season. Long Beach dropped to 1-5 in the SCRFU, and 8-8 overall for the year.
The Beach continues their SCRFU campaign with a contest against the UCLA Bruins. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 11 in Los Angeles.
RUGBY NOTES:
One converted try short - Cal Poly's 135-0 win was one try short of the 142-0 record victory by Australia over Namibia in a IRB Rugby World Cup contest. It is not known at this point if this score is a national collegiate record. Stay tuned to The Squeeze blog for ongoing developments...
