For Long Beach State 's rugby team, the SCRFU Division 1 campaign that was already disastrous got even worse, as newcomers Claremont Colleges annihilated the 49ers, 41-17.
Claremont went on a scoring barrage early, and often, reeling off 5 straight tries before the Beach could finally score. Andrew Medal, Nick Gasdia, and Paul Infante scored tries for the Beach, with Robert Hughes adding a conversion.
The reserves, also known by the locals as “The Killer Bees,” saw their undefeated run at the hands of a feisty, competent Claremont B side, salvaging a point in a 10-17 losing effort. While the match was abandoned due to one player for Long Beach State not able to get off the field, the result would stand since more than five minutes of the second half was played.
Long Beach State dropped to 8-7 for the season, and 1-4 in SCRFU play, Claremont improved to 2-4.
The 49ers will hit the road to take on powerhouse Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo on March 3. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
