As a pack of fifteen donning maroon and gold pushed through to score the first try of the game, the fans had a gut feeling it would be the same old story. The Arizona State Sun Devils, through capitalizing on mistakes on line-outs, scrums, tackling, and any lack of fundamentals, crushed Long Beach State 45-17 in a match that wasn't even close.
While Robert Hughes scored two tries and a conversion, and Andrew Medal added another try to pace the 49ers, Long Beach State's backs were exposed early and often. A capacity crowd of mostly Beach supporters witnessed an impressive bevy of scoring attack and speed from the feisty visitors from Tempe, breaching the line and capitalizing on drop kicks for tries.
With the loss, Long Beach State drops to 8-6, and 1-3 in SCRFU play, while Arizona State improves to 3-3 in the SCRFU.
Meanwhile, the Killer Bees-Long Beach State's reserves, went the opposite direction of the first side, lynching the Sun Devils 59-5, with Arizona State's lone try scored after the match was already decided.
Long Beach State continues their season hosting newcomers Claremont Colleges on February 24. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
