It didn't take long for the Long Beach State rugby team to exorcise the demons from last week. Traveling down the I-5, the 49ers faced the University of San Diego Toreros at Manchester Village Field, located on ther Alcala Park campus. With CSULB Head Coach Dr. Emyr Williams asking his players to dig deep, and play their hearts out just like they did in the practicies leading up, the 49ers delivered, defeating USD 17-7 for their first conference win of the season.
In times of crisis, when the game is on the line, a team in any sports looks to their playmaker to bring a tough victory on the road. For Long Beach State, that player was none other than outside half Robert Hughes. He would score 12 of the Beach's 17 points, and in every way possible: a penalty, a try, and two conversions, with the other try coutesy of hooker Gregory Tam.
The reserves continued their winning form, also defeating San Diego 14-7.
With the win, Long Beach State improves to 8-4, and 1-1 in the SCRFU Division 1. The Toreros dropped to 0-2 in SCRFU Division 1.
Fresh off a gutsy, spirited performance, the 49ers will prepare for visits from Arizona and Arizona State. The Wildcats, who are 2-2 in the division, will clash with the 49ers on Friday, February 16. Kickoff is scheduledfor 2:00 p.m. And on Sunday, Feburary 18, it seems proper that the Sun Devils of Arizona State (1-3 SCRFU) will roll into town. Kickoff for that match is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
