Last year, Long Beach State defeated the San Diego Toreros in their match at Alcala Park, 17-7. This year, it was more of the same, as five different players scored for the 49ers, who rolled to a 24-14 victory over USD at the CSULB Rugby Field on Saturday afternoon.
The match went off to a rough start for Dr. Emyr Williams' first side, as the Toreros jumped to an early 14-0 lead 15 minutes into the match. However, that would be all the Toreros would have, as Long Beach State proceeded to slowly, but surely, take over the contest.
Austin Reed kicked things off with a try in the 18th minute. In the second half, Gustavo Arechia, Tetsuo Ozeki, and Nick Gasdia would each score a try to take the game out of reach for San Diego.
Newcomer Jeff Pound kicked two conversions for the match. With the victory, the 49ers improve to 4-4 and for the season, and 1-0 in the SCRFU University Division 1. As per the bonus system, the 49ers get a full five points for their performance. USD drops to 0-1 in SCRFU University Division 1 play.
The 49ers will next be in action against the UC San Diego Tritons, on February 8, 2008. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m. at the RIMAC Field in La Jolla, CA.
