Sac State flexes muscles in 60-10 torch of Beach, player injured in loss

By the end of the 80 minutes of the match, the people in attendance, the players, the coaches, and maybe even the man upstairs knew the inevitable: the Northern California teams were going to be packing a punch this Spring. The Sacramento State Hornets flew into Long Beach, and in what was supposed to be a close, enthralling encounter turned into a painful one-sided affiar compounded by one of the starters suffering a serious injury on the home side.

The Hornets defeated the 49ers, 60-10, in a game that was dominated by one team, and one team only. Like many teams in the talent-packed NCRFU, the Hornets were buoyed by talent that came from the local high high school programs in the area. With this in mind, it was not surprising of the talent rift between the two sides by halftime, when CSUS led 36-0, a tribute to fluid passing, great speed by its backs, and superb line-outs and kicking accuracy.

Midway through the first half, a Beach forward suffered a broken collarbone on a freak upending tackle by one of the CSUS forwards. His status is day-to-day.

Jason "J.P." Palaita and Chris Lewis scored the only tries of the game for the 49ers, who fell to 7-3 for the year. The Hornets improve to 2-0.

Beach Rugby will be back in action on February 4, in the SCRFU Division I and IB (reserve side) action against UC San Diego. Kickoff time is set for 1:00 p.m.
