Course Objective
and Format: Theory and applications of Electronic commerce.
Other issues such as e-cash, e-banking, e-tailing, SCM, e-marketing, Internet business opportunities, network security,
home page maintenance, Internet database interface and cooperative computing
will also be covered.

expected. Students who do not have a recent background in fundamentals of
computers/information systems are advised to study at least one introductory

Homework 1 (15%):
Literature Survey of E-commerce. Find three articles of e-commerce related to the following
topics.

Guidelines:
1)
The sources must not be more than 6 months old.
2) The most likely
target journals are: Information Week, Computer world, PC Week,
InfoWorld, Industrial Engineering, and PC World. and other journals or from Internet.
4) Write summary for three articles. In your
summary include: a) Brief abstract, b) why this topic is important, and c) what
is the most significant managerial factor that you learned from the article.
5) You may relate this assignment to your final
paper.
6) You should select all 3 articles on one
topic
7) You must provide
the exact source of the article (i.e., name of journal, date,
page #s, etc.)
Homework 2 (15%):
Find a web site(s) which provide a special function or features with very
innovative ideas.
Create a web site with hyper links to the site(s) you found
Prepare a 5 minute presentation to discuss the
1. design
2. functions
3. business models compared with
traditional model
4. your own innovative ideas
Homework 3 (15%):
Debates. There will be a debates during the semester. The
debate teams will be composed of 5 members each team. The rest of the students
will be observers and judges. (Each student will participate in one debate.)
The potential topics for debates are:
a) Should a company use a charge back system (profit center) for their use of the information system department services.
b) Should a company use outsourcing (extensively, as a corporate strategy) in e-commerce area.
c) Should Compaq computer dedicate all its sales to E-commerce?
d) As a manager in a Venture capital company, which is the major investment in Internet infrastructure for the next 10-15 years? Cable or DSL
e) As a major security brokerage company going to develop on-line trading operation, which strategy is better in terms of buying an on-line brokerage firm or developing from scratch.
f) Should management monitor the E-mail of the employees?
Note: Students are encouraged to suggest other topics for the debates.
Final Project: (35%)
Develop a business proposal which applies e-commerce
technologies. Describe this model in terms of

4.Marketing strategies (4 Ps)
5. Implementation technologies (such as
what types of h/w s/w will be used, network connection...)
