The arrival of Europeans in the American West had many consequences for American Indian people.  Using the accounts of Cabeza de Vaca as well as relevant sections of the Calloway text, describe how American Indians responded to Europeans.  How did Indians respond to specific encounters with Europeans or Euro-Americans?  What impact did Europeans and Euro-Americans have on Indian societies and cultures?  What kinds of future consequences could Indians forsee?  How did Indians see their place in this "New World" change with contact and colonization by Europeans?
When did these encounters and changes occur, and where?

Be sure to use specific examples from the readings to support the points you make in your paper.  Papers should be approximately 3 pages in length, double-spaced, on white paper.
