Watch one of the following films assigned for viewing with your learning circle group prior to class on November 29, 2004:
Deliverance, Taxi Driver, Born on the Fourth of July, or Full Metal Jacket.
For your essay (2-3 pages, double-spaced,
typed), compare the film characters' "demonstration of manhood" with that
of any
relevant readings (assigned from November
1-29, 2004). In what ways do the film's major male characters
express their
masculinity? What roles do "others"
(women, children, gays, people of color, or "unmanly" men) play in a character's
emerging sense
of being a man? How does this compare
to the ways in which men of the late 19th and 20th centuries demonstrated
their
manhood? (In other words, using
the readings, can you contextualize the film within the larger context
of American men's lives over the
last 150 years?)
New Due Date: Monday, November 29, 2004.
