Students Transferring to CSULB

Because the Psychology major is impacted, transfer students must meet the eligibility requirements listed below during the semester prior to the start of their first semester at CSULB (during spring for the fall semester, for example), or they will be denied admission to CSULB.  Because of impaction and the current budget crisis, it is suggested that transfer applicants designate a non-impacted program as a second, alternate choice for major on their university application.  (That alternate major should be one a student is willing to complete if denied acceptance to the psychology major.  Many Psychology majors have chosen Human Development or Sociology as their alternate majors.*)  Also, eligible applicants may be selected for admission on the basis of cumulative grade point average and space available, so again an alternate major is suggested.  (Admission to a non-impacted major is also subject to space availability.)

*For other non-impacted majors please see a current CSULB Catalog.

Eligibility Requirements for Transferring as a Psychology Major

1.   A grade of "C" or better in PSY 100 (General Psychology), PSY 110 (Statistics) and PSY 200 (Research Methods), or their equivalents.  (Please consult the Community College Equivalency list for California community college equivalencies, or refer to the Department Handbook for Southern California community college equivalencies.)

2.   Completion of a minimum of 60 semester units of degree credit, including all lower-division General Education requirements, with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.25.  Eligible applicants may be selected for admission on the basis of cumulative grade point average and space available.  (That GPA may be considerably greater than the current 2.25.)

Conditions for Remaining in the Major

Students provisionally admitted to the major on the basis of the requirements noted above must complete PSY 301 (Psychology as a Discipline and a Profession) with a passing grade no later then the end of their first semester in the major.  Failure to do so will result in the student being dropped from the major.  Also, students placed on academic probation at CSULB will be dropped from their major.
NOTE: Students may apply for admission to the Psychology major no more than twice - transfer students who are admitted to CSULB as Psychology majors and are subsequently dropped have only one more opportunity to apply to the major.  It is suggested at that point that students take and pass PSY 301 prior to reapplying.

Becoming a Psychology Major

Matriculated transfer students who were not admitted to the university as Psychology majors (but rather through another department) seeking admission to the major in Psychology must submit an application and transcripts (these may be copies) directly to the department by going to the Peer Advising Office.  For matriculated students, this may be done at any time, but to be guaranteed admission in time to be a major when registering for the subsequent semester, applications must be received by February 18th for the following fall semester and September 24th for the following spring semester.  The Peer Advisors will review the application to make sure it is complete and provide a dated receipt.  Please see How to Become a Psychology Major.

SOAR (Student Orientation, Advising and Registration)

It is highly recommended that transferring students attend a COLA (College of Liberal Arts) SOAR session, typically offered twice during the summer and once during the winter sessions.  The SOAR program not only allows attending transfer students to register earlier than those who don't attend, but also the Psychology department provides advising and registration assistance at the COLA sessions.  Please register for SOAR as soon as possible, as these sessions fill up quickly.
