How
to Submit a
Psychology Major/Minor
Application
THE APPLICATION PROCESS
FOR
MAJOR APPLICANTS:
In order to
declare psychology as a major, you should apply to the department after you have
completed 56 units with an overall GPA no lower than 2.25 (or after 36 units if
your overall GPA is 3.0 or better) and the following courses (or their
equivalents at other colleges) with a grade of C or better:
1) PSY 100, General Psychology
2) PSY 210, Introductory Statistics (formally 110)
3) PSY 220, Research Methods (formally 200)
Completing Psychology 301 in the first
semester after admission (if not already complete) is a condition for remaining
in the major. University policy prohibits the acceptance of
students on probation to the Psychology Department.
FOR
MINOR
APPLICANTS:
To declare
psychology as a minor, you must have completed the following courses (or their
equivalents) with a grade of C or better.
1) PSY 100, General Psychology
2) PSY 210, Introductory Statistics (formally 110)
3) PSY 220, Research Methods (formally 200)
In order to apply to the Major/Minor:
1) Complete the application thoroughly (see link below). Note that there are two pages. Incomplete applications will not be processed.
2) Obtain transcripts (unofficial are acceptable) of all psychology work from colleges other than CSULB as well as your unofficial transcripts from CSULB. Copies are acceptable. A copy of your degree audit or transcripts from "MyCSULB" showing psychology courses and grades in psychology may be substituted for transcripts. However, the title of the course must be included on the transcripts, not just the course number.
3) Submit the application and documents to one of the Peer Advisors in rm Psy 206. Students may apply at any time and should receive notification of admission to the major in about three to four weeks. See note below for recommended deadlines for applications.
4) Obtain a numbered and dated receipt from the Peer Advisor.
What to do while you are waiting:
Students with fewer than 60 units may be admitted to
pre-major status. Click here for a list of courses you may take. Also,
pre-majors are welcome to use the resources in the Peer Advising offices and to
participate in all department activities and student organizations. Obtaining
pre-major status enables the department to plan the appropriate number of
courses to offer and shows evidence of your intent to be a major should a
question of changes in requirements occur. Pre-major status will add you to the
departmental e-mail list.
Notification of acceptance:
You will be notified by mail whether you have been admitted
to the psychology department. It is our intent to notify you in time for you to
enroll through IVR/MyCSULB for the following semester (Fall for those who apply
by February 18th and Spring for those who apply by September 24th).
If you have applied in a timely fashion and have not received notification by
the time you need to enroll, please stop by the Peer Advising offices for
clarification. In order to ensure that your application is completely processed
in time for the next semester registration or for graduation purposes, turn in
the application about four weeks before the deadline.
What to do after you receive
your acceptance letter:
Stop by the Peer Advising offices at your earliest
opportunity to pick up the official Psychology
Department Information packet and sign the official major change form.
At that time you can also discuss your planned program and ask any remaining
questions. This process will take from 20 to 30 minutes. You will not be in the
Psychology major until all of your official transcripts from all other colleges
have been submitted to Brotman Hall and you have come into the Peer Advising
Office to sign the major change form and picked up the packet. Those
applying to the minor will be notified by mail that the minor application has
been processed and a change made to their CSULB transcript.
