Motivating Employees Through an Efficacious Environment: The Impact on
Perceived Self-Efficacy and Performance Outcomes or Employees
An efficacious environment was built in
a simulated work setting to investigate if the concept of self-efficacy could be
applied to the workplace. This environment included all of the components of
guided master modeling, as suggested by the Social Cognitive Theory. Of main
concern was whether an efficacious environment would have an impact on the
perceived self-efficacy of the subjects and on performance outcomes. The tasks
performed by the subjects included writing out complete APA-style references.
Pretest and posttest measures were taken on self-efficacy, quality, and quantity
of references. The control condition, proctored by a trained manager, consisted
of a self-study session. A trained manager built and maintained an efficacious
environment in the experimental condition. The results showed that the
efficacious environment had a significant impact on quality of performance
outcomes, however no significant effect could be reported for self-efficacy and
quantity of performance outcomes.
