The Effects of Negative Affectivity and Years of Non-Management Experience vs. Management Experience
on Role Ambiguity and Role Conflict in Newly Promoted Managers

There has been little research on the personality characteristics that affect a new manager’s ability to adjust to the role of manager.  This study contributed to understanding this phenomenon by exploring the impact of reports of Negative Affectivity (NA) on reports of Role Ambiguity and Role Conflict.  Data were collected on 65 new managers.  Measures completed by subjects included a biographical data sheet, NA Scale, and Role Ambiguity and Role Conflict Scale.  New managers high on NA reported higher degrees of role ambiguity and role conflict than those low on NA and new managers with no previous management experience reported higher degrees of role ambiguity than new managers with previous management experience at some point in their careers.
