Work Value Orientations: Its Antecedents and Consequences
This study investigated the antecedents
and consequences of idiocentrism-allocentrism at work. It was hypothesized that
ethnic and socioeconomic background, gender and sports experience have an
influence on idiocentrism-allocentrism; and idiocentrism-allocentrism has an
influence on competitive and cooperative attitudes, perception of an ideal
leader and group. Information on these variables was obtained through the use
of a survey that was distributed among male and female health care professionals
from varying ethnic and socioeconomic background.
Results demonstrated that the antecedent variables did not have a significant
direct effect on idiocentrism-allocentrism at work. It was found that
idocentrics espoused more competitive attitudes than allocentrics, whereas,
allocentrics espoused more cooperative attitudes than idiocentrics.
Idiocentrics and allocentrics did not differ in their preferences for an ideal
leader or group. Further analysis demonstrated that sports participation
patterns and demographic variables have a significant influence on the
consequent variables under investigation.
