The Effects of Organizational Commitment and Career Commitment on
Work-Family Conflict Experienced by Dual-Career Couples
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of organizational and career commitment on work-family conflict experienced by dual-career couples. Ninety employees of an automobile manufacturer located in the Western United States served as subjects. Subjects completed questionnaires designed to assess levels of organizational and career commitment and work-family conflict.
Results revealed a positive relationship
between high levels of organizational and career commitment, presence of
children, and work-family conflict. Presence of children similarly and
significantly predicted both men’s and women’s level of conflict.
Confounding variables of the investigation included the social desirability
response bias and organizational cultural change. Future research needs
discussed included the need to construct a model that establishes a cause-effect
relationship between work and nonwork variables on work-family conflict.
