The Effects of Night Crew Shift Work on the Quality of Marital Relationships

The purpose of this thesis was to specifically examine the effects of night (graveyard) shift schedules and how they interact with (a) marital satisfaction, (b) family and interrole (work-family) conflict, and (c) job satisfaction.  The results indicated that there was no difference in the amount of marital satisfaction reported by the shift workers.  Analysis of the mean family conflict scores indicated a significant difference; both evening and night shift workers reported significantly more family conflict than day shift workers. There was no difference in the amount of interrole (work-family) conflict reported by the shift workers.  Analysis of the mean job satisfaction scores indicated a significant difference; rotating shift workers reported significantly less job satisfaction than day shift workers.  Implications concerning separate classification of evening and night shift categories were discussed.
