This exercise is on CourseInfo.  Read the relevant materials and look over these exercises in order to prepare for the CourseInfo quiz.

Read Chapter 8 in Landrum, Davis, and Landrum's, The Psychology Major.  Then, review the APA Ethics Code and be able to apply the principles to practical examples such as how questions in research should be handled, what therapists should do when faced with ethical choices, etc.  And look over the following questions and links.

Human Research:

  1. In deciding whether a research study should be conducted, what factors should be weighed?
  2. Describe several examples of the ways a scientist's values can influence his/her work.  Which of your values do you think might influence the way you conduct research?
  3. What is informed consent? What factors must be included?  What would you most want to know about a research study before you decided whether to participate?
  4. Indicate at least three types of risks that could be encountered in psychological research. (For ideas scroll to sections D and E of the link in question 1 above).   For one of the types of risks that you mention, give an example of a psychological experiment with which you are familiar that failed to protect partcipants from that type of risk.
  5. Is deception allowed in psychological research? If so, under what conditions? If not, why not?
  6. From Sections 6.06 to 6.19 of the APA Ethics Code, describe two standards which you consider to be particularly important. Explain why.
 Animal Research Ethics:

1.Why are animals used in research? What percent of psychology research is conducted on animals? What
group of animals is used most frequently?
2.Review  objections often raised regarding the use of animals in psychological research.  What would be
the response of those who wrote the APA document on animal research (linked in question 1 above) to each
     of the objections you mention?
 3. Note alternatives to the use of animals in research. Why are these methods not used instead of conducting
     studies on animals?
 4. Name  benefits derived from animal research.  What would be the reaction of those who oppose animal
     research to these benefits?
 5. What types of requirements does APA set for the use of animals in research? What other organizations
govern the use of animals in research?
 6. Prior to reviewing this material on animal research ethics, what was your impression about how animals were
used in psychological research?  What was your impression of their care?
 7. Has your opinion on the use of animals in psychology changed since reviewing the materials?

Professonal ethics

1. What are the differences between the principles and the standards in the APA Code of Ethics?
2. What are some main ethical concerns for therapists? In addition to the issues listed in Standard 4, be sure to
review issues identified also in Standards 1,2,3, and 5.  Consider especially issues of privacy and confidentiality
     in therapy.
3. If a therapist's client is dissatisfied, to whom may he or she complain? Which categories of complaint are likely
to  bring the best results for the client?  For those bringing complaints to the American Psychological
Association,  which categories of complaint are the most frequent?
4. What is the position of the APA on therapeutic services not provided in typical in-person contexts?
5. Review Standard 7, and note several problems specific to forensic psychologists.
6. What should a psychologist do if he/she has concerns about what is ethical for a given situation--either a
situation in which he or she is involved or a problem in which he finds another psychologist involved? See
Standard 8 of the APA Ethics Code.
