The Cal State Long Beach Philosophy Department is a dynamic and growing program offering opportunities for both graduate and undergraduate study in Philosophy.

The Philosophy Department offers a Master’s Degree (M.A.) as well as an undergraduate major and minor.  Additionally, undergraduate students can also take advantage of our Honors Program and our Pre-Law Emphasis.

The department currently has 175 undergraduate philosophy majors, and over 30 students active in its M.A. program.

The areas of specialization for tenured and tenure-track faculty members teaching in the department for the 2007-2008 academic year include (in alphabetical order): Aesthetics, Cognitive Science, Early Analytic Philosophy, Early Modern Philosophy, Epistemology, Ethics, Metaphysics, Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Law, Philosophy of Mind, and Philosophy of Religion.

The department is home to the Applied Ethics Center, the Cognitive Science Group, and the Center for the Advancement of Philosophy in the Public Schools. 

The Applied Ethics Center hosts an annual lecture series.

The Cognitive Science Group hosts an annual conference. This year’s conference was entitled "The Horizons of Vision Research." Last year ’s conference was entitled "Mirror Neurons and Cognition." 

The Center for the Advancement of Philosophy in the Public Schools administrates a teacher in training program where upper division and graduate level CSULB philosophy students are trained in pedagogy prior to teaching philosophy units in public school classrooms.

In addition, the Department hosts the California Conference for Early Modern Philosophy.
