Zipfer Reviewed
The evaluations of Zipfer by a panel of professional beer connoisseurs,
as they appeared in Suds 'n Stuff,* give a good initial insight into the
quality of Zipfer.
... is pale gold with light golden highlights. Big white frothy head that is long lasting. Lots of hops and malt to taste and well balanced. All the rich flavors end in a bitter dry finish. Good example of European brew. "Skip" Stearns, Shamrock Imports, Long Beach, California.
... pale gold color and rich creamy head. ... the malty aroma gave way to a heavy dose of hops and (surprisingly) 5.4 % alcohol. ... too heavy on the hops for my palate. Kent Hirschfelder, Kent's Deli & Market, St. Louis, Missouri.
This is a pleasant surprise. ... not made in the international lager/Europils style. There is actually hop and malt character. Bravo! The hop bitterness does not dominate over the malt, both aroma and taste. The head rises vigorously and is long lived. The body is medium, good mouth feel and the finish is fairly long with hops to the end. Very pleasant. Paul Simpson, Piccadilly Beverage Shops, Champaign, Illinois
Pale gold color with a hoppy nose. The beer has a big hop presence in its taste, with a fresh texture. ... drank very nicely. Donny Sanders, Monaghan's Fine Wine, Liquor & Beer, Toms River, New Jersey.
Brilliant light golden color, a white cloud head that forms a spotty lace as it disappears. Pleasant bitter hoppiness to the nose that follows through in full force on the palate and stays with you. A solid well made pilsner. Would be great with a variety of spicey food. A Winner! Terry Price, Connecticut Wines & Spirits, Greenwich, Connecitcut.
In discussing hops and the hop flavor, Charles Hiigel commented
that as you develop your taste for the full flavor of hops, consider gradually
moving from south to north in Germany. Interestingly all of the above reviews
mention the hoppiness in Zipfer, an Austrian pilsner-style beer. Relate
Zipfer more to the Austrian/Czech style, the originators, and we'll be
ok.
