Joe Spencer Stone became part of CSULB's Applied Music Faculty in Fall 2000, teaching oboe, horn, and clarinet. He has also played Second oboe/English horn in the Long Beach Symphony since 1980. He has been Principal oboe for the Long Beach Opera since 1983, a member of the Long Beach Municipal Band since 1993, and Principal oboe for the Chamber Orchestra of the South Bay (Palos Verdes) since 1978. Each summer, as part of the Laguna Beach Festival of the Arts Pageant of the Masters, he plays oboe as part of a 29 piece staged orchestra, in 52 performances. He is active as a Hollywood studio musician involved in television shows, motion pictures, commercials, movie trailers, and record recording sessions. Projects include: Chicago Hope, Coach, StarTrek: Voyager, Cherokee Kid, Emmy winning TV film To Dance with the White Dog, and motion pictures, Little Big League, Endless Summer 2, Heavyweights, Eddie, McHale's Navy, Apollo 11, Trial and Error, and Ditchdigger's Daughter.

He received a BM (1979) and a MM (1986) both in Music Performance (Oboe) at the University of Southern California. His principal teachers were William Criss and David Weiss. He has had oboe master classes with Thomas Stacy, John Mack, Lothar Koch, Ray Still, and Malcolm Messiter.

As an Applied Music Instructor, Joe has taught oboe and saxophone at El Camino Junior College since 1986, Whittier College since 1991, and CSU Dominguez Hills since 1996. He also is Applied Music Faculty at Cerritos College, teaching oboe, saxophone, clarinet, and flute.
