Welcome to Orchestral / String Studies at California State University, Long Beach.

The 80-plus member Symphony Orchestra is recognized as one of the finest university ensembles in Southern California. A wide and varied repertoire, ranging from the Baroque to the 21st Century, emphasizing historically informed performance practices, is presented in four repeated programs each semester. The scope of the program is growing exponentially. As described by the Long Beach Gazette: “The orchestra sounded great … and played with passion and commitment.”

Ensembles available in Orchestral / String Studies include the Symphony Orchestra, the University String Quartet, Collegium Musicum, and String Chamber Music.

Highlights of our program include:

  • Masterclasses by artists such as Midori and LA Philharmonic’s concert master Martin Chalifour
  • Collaborations with a variety of faculty artists, composers, ballet companies, and CSULB’s Choral, Vocal, and Opera Department
  • Students’ regular acceptance into summer programs such as Aspen and Tanglewood
  • A faculty consisting of well-known professional chamber and orchestral musicians
