Violist John Hayhurst joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic in July 1984 after two seasons as a member of the Denver Symphony. He has received critical acclaim for his performances in the Tippett Triple Concerto (January 1992 at the Music Center, Andre Previn conducting) and in the West Coast Premiere of Bright Sheng’s Three Chinese Love Songs on the new Music Group series (April 1991).

Mr. Hayhurst regularly performs in the Philharmonic Chamber Music society and New Music Group concerts, and has performed in both International and National chamber music festivals.

Despite his busy performing schedule, Mr. Hayhurst is passionate towards teaching. He has been a long time faculty member at California State University, Long Beach and at the Colburn School of music. He also is on the faculty at the University of Southern California where he works with advanced students in preparing and auditioning for professional careers. His students have been accepted to undergraduate as well as graduate programs at prestigious conservatories including USC, CIM, Northwestern, Rice and Eastman and Manhatten.

Mr. Hayhurst graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Southern California. He earned a Master of Music degree, also cum laude, at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studied with Robert Vernon, principal violist of the Cleveland Orchestra.
