In the Culture and Gender Development Laboratory, we study how, across different ethnic groups, children's gender identities develop from preschool to early elementary school. We not only examine changes in gender identities over time, but we also investigate what factors lead to differences in gender identities, as well as what consequences come about due to children's gender identities.
To study these issues we observe children's gender-related behaviors in the laboratory. We also interview children and ask them about how they feel and think about being a girl or boy. In addition, we interview parents to share with us their own observations of their children.
