WHAT KINDS OF CANCERS ARE INCREASING AT AN ALARMING RATE?

In English-speaking countries, the incidence of cancer is increasing at an alarming rate. In just the past four years, in the United States, the number of men who die every year of prostate cancer has increased from 34,000 to 41,000. (Eight years ago it was 27,000.)(Boring, Squires, and Tong, 1992, and Time Magazine, 1996) If you adjust for the large difference in population size, the number is far lower in China. In the 1990's, 50,000-60,000 Americans die of colorectal cancer each year, and 40,000-50,000 American women die of breast cancer. It can be seen from Table 1 that among the most deadly types of cancer, death rates from steroid-involved cancers (those which involve steroid hormones in one way or another) have increased at the greatest rate over the past four years. These are mostly cancers of the reproductive system, broadly defined.
