COMPREHENSIVE EXAMS

If you chose the COMP Exam Option:

  • You will have two attempts to pass your COMPs.
  • Your COMPs are composed of three Exams and you must pass all three Exams within your two attempts.
  • The COMPs are usually given on successive Fridays during the 4-6th weeks of FALL/SPRING semesters.
  • You must sign-up for the COMPs by the posted deadline. At the time of registration, you must specify the three Exams subjects you will be taking. You may not change your exam subjects once they have been selected.
  • You must be Advanced to Candidacy and in Good Standing.

Qualifications for Taking the COMP Exams

Before you register for the Comprehensive Exams, you must satisfy the following conditions:

• Advanced to Candidacy. To file for Advancement to Candidacy please make an appointment to meet with the Graduate Advisor, Dr. Maples. Appointments can be made on-line beginning August 1, 2014.
• In Good Standing (i.e., your GPA must be at least 3.0).
• Officially enrolled in at least one class during the Fall 2014 Semester.


On the Day of the COMPS

What to bring on the day of the Comp Exams…
A photo ID and your Student ID number
An adequate supply of pencils and erasers to use for the duration of the exam(s). A pencil sharpener will not be available
A bottle of water if you wish
A non-programmable calculator (your cell phone can not be used)

What not to bring* on the day of the Comp Exams…
A cell phone
A backpack, large purse, or other carrying bag
Paper or class notes
A computer or programmable calculator
A timer or alarm watch
Food or drink other than a bottle of water
*If you bring these items, be prepared to set them at the front of the classroom.
