Information about the RISE Grant.

The highest priorities for selecting CSULB-RISE-Fellows are as follows:

• A student participating in the MBRS program must be a citizen or a non-citizen national of the United States (generally persons born in U.S. territories) or have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence (Green Card).

• Full time student.
• Member of the following ethnic groups (African American, Hispanic, Native American, U.S. Pacific Islander (Hawaii, Samoan, Guamanian, Northern Mariana Islander)) – The RISE grant is under a federal mandate to focus on these groups.  NIGMS is discussing changes in the criteria for student admission to the program.
• Competitive GPA (at least 2.5)
• Major in the Sciences
• Open to attending graduate school following completion of undergraduate work.

How many Fellows can be supported?

              We have support for 24 undergraduates. 

How many years of support can a student obtain?

There is no limit on years.  Although it is expected that a student will not require more than 2-3 years of support and is making satisfactory progress toward her/his degree and research project.

What is the maximum dollar amount of support?

Students are paid at $9.00/hr.  They may work 15hrs/week during the academic year (30 weeks), and up to 40 hrs/week during academic breaks (13 weeks).  This could total $8,730 a year.

What costs does this grant support?

These funds support the hours the students work on a faculty’s research project.  Students’ participation in specified activities (i.e., seminars, workshops, visits to doctoral institutions) is required.  Also, the grant supports conference registration fees, travel to conferences, and cost of some research supplies.

Additional information:  There are at least 26 faculty labs available, with more to be added in the near future.  Most laboratories will likely accommodate 1-2 students.
