Ms. Johnson

Marni Johnson, French Horn, is a commercial freelance musician in Los Angeles.   For over thirty years, she has worked in many phases of the industry: recording and live performance, as well as teaching and coaching.

Ms. Johnson started horn at age eleven and studied with Robert K. Hamilton while growing up in Modesto, California.   She continued her training at California Institute of the Arts and graduated in 1971 with a BFA degree.   That same year, she joined Musician's Local 47 and began to work; first, a tour with Burt Bacharach, then playing a record date for the Carpenters, soon becoming the first female brass player to work commercially in L.A.

Ms. Johnson has recorded with such artists as: Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Barbra Streisand, Isaac Hayes, Earth Wind & Fire, Michael Jackson, Prince, Sheena Easton, Natalie Cole, Christina Aguilara, the Carpenters, Shirley Horn, Puff Daddy, and Juan Gabriel.   Her television experience includes the Star Trek series, Roots, and "the Mancini Generation" where she was a member of Henry Mancini's orchestra.   Motion pictures include "Color Purple," "Batman," "Rocky II" and "101 Dalmations."   She has played for such awards shows as: the Emmy's, the Grammys and the Academy Awards.

Ms. Johnson has considerable experience in musical theater, having played principal horn at the Shubert Theatre for twenty-five years.   While there, she recorded the sound-track for Andrew Lloyd Weber's "Sunset Boulevard" starring Glenn Close.   Her orchestral experiences include: playing principal horn in the Valley Symphony under Elmer Bernstein, principal with the Ventura and Santa Barbara Symphonies.   In addition she was a member of the Glendale Symphony for nine years under Carmen Dragon.   She has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Pasadena, Long Beach and New West Symphonies.   Also, she was a member of the Westwood Wind Quintet.   Ms. Johnson teaches privately and has coached in youth orchestras.

From the beginning, Ms. Johnson has been aware of the help she received at every stage of her musical development.   Many forward thinking people and organizations can be credited for any success she has enjoyed, and she hopes Kaleidoscope will serve as an example of how music can promote goodwill and common goals in our modern society.
