Seminar meetings times:

Since you are all members of NSTA, be sure you have looked through the latest issue of The Science Teacher before our meetings. If there are topics you would like to discuss that are not on our agenda be sure to bring them up when we visit you in the schools or send us an e-mail message.

By the end of student teaching you must meet the following outcomes:

• successful completion of your student teaching assignment(s) and related observation assignment (see Appendix of Student Teaching Handbook)
• share a video taped segment of your own teaching during seminar & submit a written a reflective essay about the lesson
• attend the College of Education Inservice day
• participated in the bulletin board discussions
• demonstrate that you have incorporated at least 7 of the following activities into your own classroom
• cooperative learning (as distinguished from group work)
• lab activities
• demonstrations
• open-ended activity
• questioning and wait time (open ended questions)
• write unit and lesson plans that include feedback from your cooperating teacher and/or university supervisor
• SDAIE techniques
• learning cycle
• use a variety of technologies to enhance your teaching
• accurately portray about the nature of science
• use alternative assessment strategies
• use formative assessment strategies and show how they inform your teaching

 

• What did you observe yourself saying and doing?
• How much time was spent on instruction giving, student activities, lecture/instruction, management, interacting with students?
• How many different students did you call on? How many times did you use students' names?
• How did your teaching behaviors compare to those you had intended to use (as written in a lesson plan prepared before you taught the lesson)?
• What impact did your behaviors have on your students?
• What were the lesson's apparent goals? How do they compare with the goals you wrote in your lesson plan?
• What did you like about the lesson?
• What you would change the next time you taught the lesson?
• Compare what you observed with what you wrote about in your rationale paper.

From this tape, select a five minute segment to share with the group during one of our seminars.

The essay is due the night you share your videotape with us in seminar.
