By the time you leave the computer lab today you ought to have completed
1-4, #5 will be done at home.
1. Find and browse through my website
http://www.csulb.edu/~lhenriqu
When you are there, note that state, national and local science
standards are posted
You have already examined the science standards in class. You will
want to make a note of their URLs so that you can find them when you do
your CD or website review. All of them are linked from my homepage and
the course homepage. Having the entire document on-line will be quite a
convenience for you, but all are available for sale as well.
2. Visit a science museum on-line - there are several you can find from my home page. Almost all science and technology museums have virtual tours. Spend 10-15 minutes touring the museum. Pay attention to the types of information or materials that would be helpful to you as a science teacher.
Answer the following questions:
What science units would be enhanced by a trip to this museum?E-mail the this information to yourself and to me at lhenriqu@csulb.edu (be sure to include your name on your submission).
What are the hours, admission costs, and address for this museum?
List at least three cool things about this museum (exhibits, special tours, unique features).
3. POWERPOINT - you are going to put together a short, 3-6 slide presentation about a topic in science education. I will share a short PPT presentation with you at this point to give you some guidelines and suggestions. You will select topics from the NARST Research Matters to the Science Teacher or the ERIC Digest page. When you find a topic you like tell me. Only one person is allowed to do a topic. Topics selected on a first come first serve basis.
You will present the slides as a power point presentation in class. You must have a copy of your presentation to give to students as a handout. A single page with all slides on it with space for notes. I will show you how to do that. We have 27 students in class so you will need 28 copies (one for each student, one for your file and one for me).The first slide will be a title slide - include your name, the topic you are reviewing and the reference for your research. The next slide(s) will highlight the main points of the research. The last slide(s) will include suggestions for us as teachers based on your article.
You will need to paste an image into your powerpoint presentation. This shows me that you know how to copy and save images. When you are done you will need to save the presentation on disk and/or e-mail the presentation to me as an attachment.
Getting images into a document - You can get images off the web
(or from clip art files). To do so you will want to save or copy the image.
To save on an IBM (PC) right click the image and select 'save image'. To
save on a MAC click on the image and hold down the button until the options
appear (save as, copy, etc.). You can save the image to disk (or to your
hard drive). You can then insert it into a word processed document. Practice
getting an image from a website and pasting it into a word document or
your PPT document.
I will go over power point with you but here are some tutorials that
will help you out.
* a
step-by-step guide to creating presentations with powerpoint
* how
to turn word documents into powerpoint
You will be presenting the major points of your article in class to us using the slide presentation that you make today. You will only have 5 minutes so be selective about what you want to share with us. (I will cut you off at the 5 minute mark!)
4. REVIEW OF EDUCATIONAL WEB BASED MATERIALS - you are going to review a science content website. Alone or with a partner you will go through the website, do the activities and read the materials. If you've not done one, a science "web quest" might be the perfect thing for you! You will be reviewing the software on your own time (unless you have time tonight).
REMINDER: Next week you will be performing demonstrations
in class. Bring a blank video tape. If you are going to need materials
from me I must know by Monday. Within reason, I will try to get them for
you. You will want to practice your demonstration before you do it for
class. You are not expected to give full explanations of the demo. Let
me know if you have questions. Please remember that I need an electronic
version of the demonstration description for posting on the web.
