We will start at the Library's Home Page. From there go to electronic resources. You will be selecting ERIC which can be found alphabetically under "E" or by topic under "Education."
We will do a couple of searches together and then you will conduct at least 2 searches for your topic. E-mail the results of those searches to yourself and your group.
WE NEED YOU TO FIND AT LEAST TWO HANDS-ON ACTIVITY RELATED TO YOUR TOPIC USING ERIC. E-MAIL THE RESULTS TO US AND YOURSELF (lhenriqu@csulb.edu, WShaf6676@aol.com). If you are going to plan your unit as a group you should e-mail your results to your team members. No more than 4 people per group.
You will also need to find a "misconceptions" article related to your topic. You can find this via ERIC searches as well.
2. Science Teaching Resources:
The National Science Teachers Association, of which you are now members,
has a site called Science Links.
This site allows you to search by keywords and find websites for teachers
and students. Each site is evaluated and indexed by the material on the
site (informational, reading, hands-on, etc.) Take the guided tour to find
out more about the site and how to make it work for you.
NASA creates some wonderful educational materials. You can find activities, posters and resources by topic or grade level. Most of the materials are able to be down-loaded. Full color versions can be ordered from NASA. The Jet Propulsion Lab (a NASA center in Pasadena) has put together a "quilt" of educational materials. The quilt is a 3-click system that takes you from grade level to standards to educational materials.
The California Department of Education has created a website to link math and science topics with grade appropriate literature.
A few educational research resources that will help you for this class and beyond!
NARST Research Matters to the Science Teacher has summaries of research on specific topics. Most have extensive reference lists so you can go back to original resources. These are SHORT meta-analysis types of articles.
The ERIC Digest page has hundreds and hundreds of articles. Unlike NARST, these are not all science specific. You can do a search in ERIC Digest to find articles about specific topics or you can browse. These are short summaries of research and articles on various educational topics.
The Eisenhower National Consoritum is another site with lots of good resources for teachers.
Various faculty members in the Science Education Department have constructed lists of relevant websites. You might want to visit them! You can find the faculty websites from the "faculty" link on the Department Home Page.
WE NEED YOU TO FIND AT LEAST TWO ITEMS, FROM TWO DIFFERENT WEBSITES, THAT WILL HELP YOU WITH YOUR UNIT. E-MAIL THE RESULTS TO US AND YOURSELF (lhenriqu@csulb.edu, WShaf6676@aol.com). If you are going to plan your unit as a group you should e-mail your results to your team members. No more than 4 people per group.
3. On-line Assignments - Field Trips, Speakers & More
As we discussed in class, there are some really cool opportunities
for you this semester. Over the course of the semester we want you to participate
in two activities which represent Science Teacher Professional Development
Outside of the Classroom. These include behind the scenes field trip planning
sessions, a variety of speakers, workshops and conferences. You will also
participate as a learner in two "technology enhanced learning experiences."
We will do the other on-line assignments in class.
Please take a moment to review the on-line
assignment page for EDEL475. Consult your calendar and find speakers,
field trips, workshops or activities that you want to take to fulfill this
requirement. You can sign-up for your event right now. Please be sure to
note which events you select as an attendance sheet is given to the instructor
for each event.
4. Power Point Presentations
We will spend a few minutes going over some power point basics to be
sure that everyone is comfortable creating and modifying power point presentations.
During this semester you will create several power point slide shows.
5. If you have zipped through everything, you can do the following:
