1. What is ISSI all about?

In an effort to improve science teaching at the elementary level we have partnered with Toyota USA Foundation to provide professional development for elementary school teachers. This program includes summer professional development (you get a stipend and you get a class set of teaching materials), workshops, conferences and seminars during the school year (you get to select which sessions to attend), and you get the option of enrolling in graduate level science courses designed specifically for K-8 teachers. This year focuses on earth/space science.

2. Who is eligible?

This program is open to 2nd through 5th grade teachers interested in increasing their confidence and competence at teaching science. We want you to be able to have someone at your school site with whom you can share ideas and teaching strategies, so to help make that happen, we are requiring that you apply to the program with another teacher from your school.

    1. What if nobody else in my school wants to apply?
Your application will get a lower priority than applications that come in pairs/teams.
    1. What if three of us want to apply?
Teams of more than two people (3 or more from the same school) will be accepted if there is sufficient room. Please prioritize the list of applicants in case we can only accept two of you.

3. When and where is the Institute?

This year’s institute will be held at CSULB June 27th-July 1st and July 5th - July 8th, 2011 from 8:00 am – 4:30 pm daily.

4. What do I get out of this?

You will learn science content, practice teaching science lessons to area youth, and receive all the curriculum and materials associated with the lessons. You’ll have increased confidence and competence at teaching science after participating in this program. Lessons are standards based, hands-on and inquiry oriented. During the academic year you will learn how to better link science instruction with math and language arts instruction.   The following chart summarizes curricula and schedule.
