California Science Teachers Association - Science Education Conference Oct. 30-Nov. 2, 2008 San Jose CA An excellent multi-day conference specifically for science teachers. more than 200 sessions to choose from! Summer Science Research Opportunity  all summer various national labs This paid internship places undergraduates at DOE National Labs for 10 weeks during the summer to accomplish cutting edge research with a mentor scientist and a master teacher.  Online applications are available beginning October and due by February 1. http://www.scied.science.doe.gov/scied/PST/about.htm  For more information contact: Todd Clark, Science Education Advisor, US Department of Energy (SC-1) todd.clark@science.doe.gov  Other summer research opportunities are available through Cal Poly's STAR program. APLE Program
Assumption Program of Loans for Educators
APPLY  Money is still available The APLE (Assumption Program of Loans for Educators)
program will target future math and science teachers for its grants, which pay off educational loans up to $19,000.  There are 6,000 available APLE awards for math and science candidates on CSU campuses who were juniors, seniors or post-bac students in 04-05 or 05-06.  The APLE program website is http://www.csac.ca.gov/doc.asp?id=111.
Edison International established a scholarship fund in 1999 to help economically and educationally disadvantaged students obtain a teaching credential.  Sixty-one (61) scholarships in the amount of $5,000 will be awarded for the 2006-07 academic year to students from 8 CSU campuses, including CSULB. Applications and Information Sheets are available in ED1-Room 67 or in the campus Financial Aid Office.  Applications cannot be mailed to students. THE SPRING DEADLINE IS FRIDAY, JANUARY, 2007  Below are the basic criteria:
Applicants must be in good standing and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale,  Applicants must demonstrate financial need as determined by the campus Financial Aid Office, Applicants must be accepted to a CSU Teacher Credential Program (Single Subject, Multiple Subject or Special Education), Candidates in the final year of a blended program to pursue both a bachelor's degree and teacher credential concurrently are also eligible 
Award preference will be given to students who are economically and educationally disadvantaged, Award preference will be given to students seeking a credential to teach math, science or special education, Recipients must remain CSU full-time equivalent students for one year. 
Applications may be submitted in the Fall and Spring terms.
Noyce Fellows Scholarship There will be a round of funding to start in fall 2008. Applications available in spring. CSULB - NSF grant (DUE-0335772) This $10,000/year scholarship is available for students persuing a single subject credential in math or science. For each year of funding you must teach for two years in a "high needs school". Find out more by visiting the website or asking Laura Henriques.
Knowles Science Teaching Fellowship Feb 1st application deadline Physical Science Teachers-to-be can be supported through this generous fellowship. Visit the website for an application and details.
College of Education Scholarships  Applications due Februrary 1st Applications available November 1st
APPLY!!! Lots of scholarships are specifically for science teachers.
There are several scholarships for future teachers (elem and secondary). You only need to fill out a single scholarship application in order to be eligible for any/all of them. You do not need to apply to a specific scholarhip. PLEASE NOTE: Boeing sponsors scholarships specifically for math/science secondary teachers and there's the Oliphant Scholarship for science teachers (SSCP or MS in science education).

September 19th - A Round Robin of Science Activities Teaching Associates from Young Scientists Camp/Summer Science Institute will share some activities they did with 4th - 10th graders this past summer. Come try out a few activities, get hand-outs for lessons & labs, and learn about how you can participate next year!
October 12th -  Physics Activities for the Upper Elementary/Middle School Classroom Join us for an evening of science lessons around physical science concepts.
November 6th    Integration Made Elementary: Connecting Life Sciences and Language Arts/ELD - Drs. Susan Gomez-Zwiep and Bill Straits will show you  how science can serve as exciting writing prompts for your ELL children and how children’s literature combined with ELD stragtegies can support your teaching of life science standards.
November 30,  Integrating Math & Science in your Classroom.THIS MEETING WILL TAKE PLACE AT CERRITOS COLLEGE. This event is cohosted by Future Math Teachers Association and the Cerritos College Math Club 3:30.
December 6th - The Job Search! Finding, Applying & Interviewing for Teaching Jobs Join a panel of experts who will share their knowledge and perspectives on how to successfully get a teaching position.
February 14, 2007 Assessment 101! Learn what makes for good and poor assessment items, how to create a test and how to use tests for learning (not just assigning grades).
March 15, 2007  NASA Education Event Join NASA Educators from the Jet Propulsion Lab. Do activities, get NASA curriculum and hand-outs.
Wednesday, April 18, 2007 Inquiry for the Elementary Classroom. Join us and learn how electricity and magnetism can serve as starting points for inquiry. Maggie Ostler will share strategies and lessons from FOSS to model what inquiry looks like in the elementary setting.

Inquiry Round-Robin - An evening of activities and an introduction to the 2004-2005 school year!
Forensic Science - Kids love to solve mysteries. Crime scence science is a great way to get kids excited about doing science. See how to incorporate forensic science into your curriculum.
Science & Literacy - Elementary folks HAVE to integrate science and literacy. Secondary folks will find that reading and writing strategies can help their students do better with science. Learn new strategies for success in this area.
Job Searching Tips & Strategies This annual event brings HR and personnel staff, principals and department chairs to share their expertise and insight into the job search process.
Rock On! Do hands-on activities rocks & minerals activities specifically tied to the 2, 4 and 6th grade standards. Dr. Sue Pritchard presenting.
Just Add Water! Join us as we learn about water resources and water quality issues. A great evening of hands-on activities, curriculum materials and information about water. Benita Horn presenting.
Marine Sciences in the K-12 Classroom - met at the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific.  Learn how to successfully incorporate marine sciences into your K-12 curriculum, learn how the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific can be integrated into your teaching and find out what they have to offer teachers.
NASA Educational Night  David Seidel, Art Hammon and Carlo Cayetano from JPL will provide information about NASA’s educational materials and lead you through several activities. Among those you will try are Reading, Writing and Rings - an integrated science/language arts lesson related to Saturn and an integrated math/science lesson to help your students understand more about the solar system and gain a sense of how big it really is.

Introduction to NSTA, Young Scientists Camp & the club, a variety of sciences activities for the K-12 classroom.
October 20 Autism in Our Classrooms
Teri Book, from For O.C. Kids, presented a great session about autism. The presentation helped you learn to identify children on the autism spectrum and to develop strategies to meet behavioral challenges they face in the classroom setting.  It also helped teachers develop teaching strategies that better engages children with autism in the learning process.
Nov. 4thNASA Educational Materials to Teach Math & Science Art Hammon and David Seidel from JPL will be sharing the best NASA has to offer! Come learn about the educational materials NASA has, how they are linked to a time-line of NASA launches and planetary visits. Meteorite Mysteries and Micro-gravity are among the great activities you will do! Read what a former student has to say about NASA and their materials!
Dec. 8  So, you want a Job! Preparing for the Job Market
Panel presentation followed by your choice of small table discussions -- Chat with the panelists, get resume and cover letter writing tips (feel free to bring along a copy of yours for feedback), professional portfolios tips and more.
March 1  Science & Literacy Learn how to infuse literacy strategies into your science teaching. Separate sessions for elementary and middle school/high school folks. Eric Brundin (Science Curriculum Coordinator for LBUSD), Barbara Atherton (Marshall Middle School), Dr. Shawn Holmes (Cabrillo HS) will work with the secondary folks. Cathy Chen, Marisela Moreno and Bill Ritz will be with the elementary folks.
March 25 Science Fairs & Science Competitions
Come learn the ins and outs of science fair planning.  Find out how to evaluate projects and help students succeed. Also learn about the various science competitions that students can do and try out a few of the events!
April 20  NASA & Mars! Hear about the Mars rovers and the exciting findings being sent back to Earth. Learn how to integrate this timely topic into your K-12 classroom! Educational materials and curriculum provided.
May 10 Science Activities and DemonstrationsTry your hand at some classic science demonstrations and do some fun experiments.

Introduction to club, life, earth and physical sciences activities for the K-12 classroom.
Oct. 8  Science & Literacy  Reading strategies, using children's books (fiction and non-fiction) to jump-start science.
Nov. 19   Science Field Trips  Steps for developing effective classroom field trips will be presented. A speaker from Bolsa Chica Wetlands will share information on how to use the wetlands for a field trip and in your classroom.
Dec. 9 Preparing for the Job Market
Panel presentation followed by resume and cover letter writing, professional portfolios tips and more.
Feb. 10 Using NASA Educational Materials to Teach Math & Science
Art Hammon and David Seidel from JPL will be sharing the best NASA has to offer. Come learn about the educational materials NASA creates and learn how to use them in your classroom.
March 11 Perceptions of Science - What does the media tell us?  Ms. Honeyman, an expert in science/technology media literacy, provided an interesting look at what the media tells us about science, technology and the role of gender.
April 3 Science Assessment - No Teacher Left Behind!  Tim Williamson (Elementary Science Consultant for Los Angeles County Office of Education) led an intensive workshop about the new 5th grade science test, the role of assessment in the classroom and a mapping of curriculum to see that the new test is for all K-5 teachers!
May 12  Inquiry Science for All and NSTA & You This evening had a pair of workshops (one for MSCP and one for SSCP candidates) and a full group activity. We  planned a session specifically for Secondary Teachers-to-be "Inquiry in the High School Setting" [panel members are: Eric Brundin (LBUSD Science Curriculum Coordinator), Elizabeth Fessler (Lakewood HS) and Martin Matthews (Wilson HS)]. The session aimed at MSCP candidate is Science, Literacy and Inquiry Activities. The full-group activity is based around your NSTA membership featuring highlights of YOUR NSTA journal.
