EDEL 475 Computer Lab
October 14, 2002
  • Today's Agenda
  • 1. ERIC Searches
You are all going to need to find teaching related articles, misconception articles (articles which discuss the misconceptions or naive ideas that students have about your topic), and activities for your resource packs. I want to review with you how to conduct an ERIC search. This will allow you to find articles about specific topics, by specific authors, in specific journals, or any other criteria you might want to use!

We will start at the Library's Home Page. From there go to electronic resources. You will be selecting ERIC which can be found alphabetically under "E" or by topic under "Education."

We will do a couple of searches together and then you will conduct at least 2 searches for your topic. E-mail the results of those searches to yourself. Send one of them to me.

    2. Introduction to Power Point
Today you will be learning how to create power point presentations. If you already know how to develop and design power point presentations you can consider this a refresher. I imagine that you'll learn a new trick or two today even if you already know the program.

We will start by learning how to create a presentation together. You will then work on your own to create a short presentation about yourself and your classroom (as if this were an Open House or Back to School Night event). The presentation will have 3 slides.

You will e-mail this to me and yourself as an attachment.

    3. Power Point Presentations Continued!
You will meet with your classmates who read the same questioning article as you. As a group develop a powerpoint presentation which we will show in class on Wednesday. This presentation should include:

  • Names of presenters
  • Full reference for the article (you can get this from course bibliography of readings in your coursepack or on-line)
  • Summary of the article
  • Implications for teachers - according to the authors, what should we do or what should we avoid in our own classrooms?
  • This presentation can take as many slides as needed. You will need to save or e-mail the presentation to me so that I can load it on the classroom computer.

    EXTRAS:
A few educational research resources that will help you for this class and beyond!
NARST Research Matters to the Science Teacher has summaries of research on specific topics. Most have extensive reference lists so you can go back to original resources. These are SHORT meta-analysis types of articles.

The ERIC Digest page has hundreds and hundreds of articles. Unlike NARST, these are not all science specific. You can do a search in ERIC Digest to find articles about specific topics or you can browse. These are short summaries of research and articles on various educational topics.

If you have zipped through the powepoint assignment and are waiting for your team mates you can do the following:
ERIC searches for your resource pack (look for articles or activities)
Web Quest on Migration (see course home page for link to the assignment)
