Bachelor of Science for Anthropology and Archaeology Students

Dr. Mai, Dr. Young Owl, and I have discussed and planned for the development of a B.S. in Anthropology for our undergraduate students that have an interest in pursuing this field of study. Clearly, archaeology and physical anthropology are becoming increasingly more aligned with natural science. Indeed, most of my work in the application of climatic reconstructions and the use of geophysical prospecting techniques involves the use of rigorous scientific methods. We feel that to serve our students in a manner that will help them compete in an increasingly competitive field, we must take this new approach in anthropology. Several major universities have begun this process and we feel that it is important to also undertake this restructuring to help our students. It is important to look forward to where archaeology will be ten years from now rather than be content with the status quo. Towards this effort we have discussed these issues with our colleagues in natural science, discussed curriculum and faculty needs, and have mentored students already following this line of education.
