More colleges opt for downloading services

As the threat of lawsuits over illegal downloading on college campuses continues to grow, institutions are adopting a "if you can't beat them, join them" mentality. They are increasingly purchasing services for entire campuses to avoid litigation. Interestingly, major record and video labels are seeing a golden opportunity for new business and are actually subsidizing these purchases. Read more about it here.

CSULB Library to receive CDs as part of an antitrust settlement

Libraries across California are beginning to receive free CDs as part of a multimillion dollar settlement with music companies. CSULB will receive it's share as well. However, all is not well with the distribution. Many libraries are complaining that the record companies are dumping their overstock on libraries, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Your Arts Librarian has looked at the list that CSULB is to receive and tends to agree. We will get many things that are useful to our Library but we'll also receive a lot of junk. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth?

DualDisc: The next new format in libraries?

DualDisc may save record labels. A story in the Chicago Tribune last week talks about this new format. One side is a CD; the other a DVD. Bruce Springsteen's new album, "Devils & Dust" may be the first foray into the new technology. Read about it here.
