    • All other atoms in alphabetical order
    • C10 H14 F3 N3 O1 S1

10
CAS Registry Numbers
  • A unique identifier for each chemical
  • Assigned by Chemical Abstract Services when new chemical is identified in the literature
  • Ex: 58-08-2 is the CAS Registry Number for caffeine, the CAS Registry Number of water is 7732-18-5
11
Try it!
  • Everybody gets a book!
  • Look for an INDEX first
12
Look For:
  • How is it organized?
    • Is there an index?
  • What information can you find about a chemical (such as benzene)?
  • Can you find… CAS number, M.P., Mol. Weight, Spectra, Structure, formulas, etc.?
13
CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics
  • QD65 H3
  • 2008/2009 in Reference, older editions on 4th floor for check out

  • Name, Molecular Formula, and CAS indexes
  • => Entries include mini-bibliography
15
Aldrich Handbook of Fine Chemicals and Laboratory Equipment
  • TP202 A37 in Reference
  • Essentially a catalog
  • One volume, easy to use
  • Contains pertinent chemical properties
  • Only Aldrich available chemicals
16
Merck Index
  • RS356 M524 in Reference
  • One volume, chemicals listed alphabetically
  • Name-reactions index
    • Listed alphabetically
    • Includes mini-bibliography
  • Not just Merck products

18
Online Sources
  • NIST Webbook
    • National Institute of standards and technology
    • Guide online instructions
    • Lists chemical properties
    • Various searches- by formula, name, CAS#
  • ChemBioFinder (limited info for free)
    • Structures, physical properties etc.
  • Organic Syntheses
    • Preparation of organic compounds
  • PubChem
    • Related to PubMed and Medline- Govt. Operated
19
Try it!
  • Try one of the online resources
20
Look for:
  • How is it organized?
  • How (by what) can you search?
  • What types of information can you find?
  • Who puts it on the web?
  • When is the last time it was updated?
21
Resources for Spectra
22
Aldrich
  • The Aldrich Library of NMR Spectra
    • Ref QC 762.P69
  • The Aldrich Library of Infrared Spectra
    • Ref QD 96.I5
  • Alphabetical Index

    • Vol 1 = 1000-1999, Vol 7 = 7000-7999, etc Newer volumes have numbers on spine
24
Try it!
  • Try one of the spectra volumes
25
Online Sources for Spectra

26
Try it!
  • Try the SDBS
27
Look for:
  • How is it organized?
  • How (by what) can you search?
  • What types of information can you find?

28
NEW TOPIC
  • Finished looking for chemical PROPERTIES

  • Now we are looking for JOURNAL ARTICLES
29
Finding Journal Articles
  • 1. Get a CITATION

  • 2. Get the ARTICLE
30
1. Getting a citation:
How do I search online?
  • Select a database to search
  • Break search into key terms
  • Search key terms using BOOLEAN Operators (AND, OR)
  • Refine search using limiters (pub. year or type, etc.)
31
Using AND
  • AND narrows a search.
    • Both terms must appear in same record
  • For instance, subject “marijuana” yields 1619 articles

32
Combine concepts to refine results!
  • marijuana
  • and legalization
  • and California

  • Gets articles with all of your key terms.
33
Using OR
  • OR broadens a search.
    • Either term may appear
    • Use for terms that have similar meanings
      • example:  “CAS Number OR CASRN”

34
I have a citation, Now What?
  • Write down everything!
    • Title
    • Author
    • Journal
    • vol., issue, page numbers
    • year
  • Or E-mail/save/print

35
Online Databases
  • Click Databases by Topic
  • Click Chemistry / Biochemistry
36
Online Databases
  • Academic Search Complete
  • ACS Web Editions (try this first!)
  • Science Direct
  • General Science Abstracts
  • Medline (Includes Royal Society of Chemistry Journals)
  • Web of Science
37
Chemical Abstracts
  • Contains citations and abstracts for articles, patents and books with new info about a substance

  • Search using SciFinder Scholar Web
    • Next session all about this
38
Try it!
  • Search a database…
39
Look For:
  • What types of things are in the database?
  • What years are covered?
  • How can you search?
  • What can you do with your results (e.g. email)?
  • Is there SFX?  What does it do?
  • Can you find an article by Henry Po or Lijuan Li?
  • Can you find an article about the Wittig reaction?
40
Getting the article
  • Full-text in the database?
  • SFX
  • Search in COAST
41
Getting the Article
  • Full-text or PDF from the database
    • Links right from database

42
SFX
  • SFX will check other CSULB sources for full-text of this article
  • Not in all databases

43
SFX Box
44
4.  Check Coast
