Freedom of Expression at the National Endowment for the Arts: This interdisciplinary curriculum project uses resources in philosophy, law, and art to consider free speech at the NEA. Funding was provided by the American Bar Association, Commission on College and University Legal Studies.
Free Speech at the State Arts Councils: This new project will examine free speech issues in the state arts councils. Anecdotal press reports suggest that censorship by state officials is emerging that parallels problems at the Federal level in the past decade.
J.S. Mill's Writings on Free Speech: This student research project, conducted in 1997, examines Mill's newspaper articles, speeches, and letters for new insights on his views on free speech.
J.S. Mill's Influence on the American Courts: This student research project examines Mill's extensive influence on the American judiciary, including court decisions which cite Mill in their reasoning.
We hope to pursue several important contemporary issues in free speech, including indecency on the Internet, hate speech, holocaust-deniers, and sexual harassment. Your ideas are welcome for project of interest to you as a student or teacher.
