How Can I Participate?

Students | Faculty

Project Free Speech welcomes the participation of students and faculty at California State University, Long Beach, as well as other colleges and universities and high schools.

STUDENTS AT CSU LONG BEACH: You can conduct an independent research project for academic credit in the Department of Philosophy. You will register for PHIL 499 (undergraduate) or PHIL 599 (graduate) for 1-3 credits. For each academic credit, you should expect to devote approximately 50 hours of work during the semester.

You will first propose a topic relating to free speech and your ideas for pursuing research on the topic. You will then work with the responsible faculty member to plan and conduct your research, using both resources on-line and in-print. You will be encouraged to identify public domain primary sources not yet available on-line which can be posted as part of your project. The results of your research project will be disseminated on the World Wide Web on a Web page that you create. To enroll, please contact Julie Van Camp at jvancamp@csulb.edu at your earliest opportunity to begin discussing your project.

STUDENTS AT OTHER COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES: You may enroll in an independent research project for 1-3 university academic credits through the Open University at CSU Long Beach. The cost per academic unit (semester system) is $126 (undergraduate) and $135 (graduate). As CSULB cannot guarantee that your home institution will accept transfer credits toward your degree at another institution, we encourage you to first consult with your own academic adviser.

To enroll in Open University, please call (800) 963-2250. As the permission of the instructor is required, please contact Julie Van Camp at jvancamp@csulb.edu at your earliest opportunity to begin discussing your project.

FACULTY: We hope you will find the resources created for Project Free Speech useful in your own teaching and research. We welcome your feedback on how you use the materials and what we could do to provide more materials useful in your own classes. We are especially interested in learning about primary documents in the public domain which are not currently available on the Web. We are currently seeking grant support to offer faculty institutes on using the Web in teaching and research on Free Speech. If you are interested, please let us know so we can more accurately assess faculty interest and keep you informed of future institutes: jvancamp@csulb.edu
