Lecture Notes: Week Four

SHORT PAPER I: Don't forget that Tuesday, 2/17 is the deadline for Short Paper I. For complete information: on the class home page, click "assignments," then "written assignments," then "short paper I." As of 7:00 a.m. Tuesday, 2/17, fifteen of you have already sent me your papers -- thanks for getting these in early.

If you're sending your paper on Tuesday, I'll be at school for two meetings all morning, away from e-mail. I'll check my e-mail before about 8:30 a.m. and after 2:00 p.m. and continuing into the afternoon and evening. So if you send your paper in the morning, you won't hear an acknowledgment from me until mid-afternoon.

Problems with Pieta II: This site seems to be off-line more than it's on. It's located at the University of Illinois at Chicago on a wonderful site called "The File Room," with a huge collection of art that has been censored in history. Alas, they seem to have a very small/weak server and a huge amount of traffic, and it's often unavailable. I've never been able to find Pieta II anywhere else. (If you find it somewhere else, let me know and I'll change the link.) I do have a link to "P--- Christ" -- a site in Europe. I suspect they are violating the copyright, but until somebody makes them take it off-line, you can look at that instead. (Again, though, you're not required to look at any of Serrano's work.)

EL NINO: If you're not in southern California, you should know that we had a gigantic rain storm move in Monday evening, continuing through Tuesday morning. One huge section of LA had a power outage Monday evening. It's certainly possible that the Long Beach campus could also suffer a power outage. So if you can't get through right away, try back later and please be patient. If there's a power outage, I'll know about it and will make appropriate adjustments -- but don't procrastinate on your paper in hopes of one!

READING: We have no new reading this week. We'll start a new unit, with new reading, on Monday, 2/23. Lecture notes on that will be sent the morning of 2/23.

DISCUSSION GROUP: I'll post excerpts from a few student papers (probably on a Web page on the class site) Thursday night -- after the deadline for late papers! Use the discussion group to comment on those of interest to you. If you're a little behind or still having problems, use this coming week to get caught up and work out the last of the technical glitches.

VIRTUAL HOLIDAY: If we were meeting in time and space in a classroom on Mondays, we would have observed the President's Day Holiday. So, once your paper is submitted, take a break and we'll get back into the swing of things next week.
