Course Requirements

You will be required to participate at least once a week on our class on-line discussion group, maintained on the CSULB Collabra News Server. Your participation will focus on (a) the assigned reading and study questions for that week and (b) writing assignments by the class, some of which will be posted to the class page.

Up to 24 points will be available for this portion of the course (out of a total of 100 points). You will be assigned a grade for your participation during Weeks One-Eight, ranging from A+ (12 points) to F (0 points). You will be assigned a second grade for your participation during Weeks Nine-Fifteen, ranging from A+ (12 points) to F (0 points). Just as with a regular in-person discussion, your grade will be based on a range of factors -- not mere "quantity" of comments, but the quality of your comments, their demonstration of your understanding of the material, and your ability to reflect appropriately and insightfully on the material of the course and the comments of other students.

Class Discussion Group

Software: Our class discussion group is maintained on the CSULB Collabra News Server. You can access this news group from any Internet Service Provider with a news reader. Netscape 2.0 and higher, as well as Internet Explorer 2.0 and higher, all have built-in news group readers, so you probably already have the software you need.

Password-CSULB students: All CSULB news groups have restricted password access. All CSULB computer accounts already have automatic password access - the news program asks you for your account name and password, enter your regular CSULB account name and password and you will be admitted to CSULB news groups. If you are a registered CSULB student, you should get your free computer account at the North Library so that you have this access. You can continue to access the Internet (and the news reader) using any Internet Service Provide (such as Compuserve, Earthlink, Netcom, or Prodigy). Once you are on-line on the Internet, you will use your CSULB account name and password to gain access to our discussion group.

Password-all others: If you are taking the course through Open University and do not have a CSULB computer account, the instructor can authorize you to be admitted to our class news group. You will access the Internet through your own commercial ISP, but the instructor will authorize you to use a special password to access our discussion group. Please send me an e-mail as soon as you have registered for the course, so that I may give you additional information on how to access our discussion group.

Class E-Mail List

A list of all the e-mail addresses of class members is available on-line, so you can get in touch with each other individually and as a group. The instructor will also use this class distribution list to send out various announcements about the course.

To access the class e-mail list: http://www.csulb.edu/~jvancamp/361/361_e.html

Bookmark this page, so you can access it easily in the future.

As soon as you have registered for the course, send me an e-mail message with your e-mail address so that I can add you to the class e-mail list. If you have more than one e-mail address (e.g., a CSULB account and a commercial account), tell me which one you use regularly so we can include that one on the class list.
