Meet twice a month, or more as needed, to receive guidance and encouragement from your mentor to:
1. identify your overall academic goals and performance
2. prepare a written research proposal by the end of the spring semester, with the project to be conducted during the summer.
Include a lit review, hypothesis, methodology, and plan for data analysis.
3. Turn in a written progress report by the last day of instruction each semester to the McNair Program.
Meet twice a month, approximately, on Saturday mornings for McNair Program Workshops and meetings which include:
Guest Speakers about Graduate School
Individual Oral Presentations about Research in Your Field
Computer Skills for Bibliographic Research and Graphic Presentations
Six Week Summer Program (early July - mid Aug.)
1. Meet once a week, or more as needed, with your mentor for supervision on the conduct of the research, analysis of the data, and interpretation of findings. Prepare for a poster and oral presentation of your research at the end of the summer program.
(This project should be prepared in a written version during the fall for spring publication in a journal published by CSULB for McNair Scholars)
2. Attend daily morning meetings of the McNair Program which includes
GRE Preparation and Practice Tests
Guidance in Grad School Application Process
Stress and Time Management Workshops
Computer and Library Workshops
Oral Presentation Skills Workshop
3. During 5th Week, present a Research Poster
4. During 6th Week, give an Oral Presentation of Your Research.
Evaluation
Proteges will be expected to provide confidential written evaluations of their mentors, available only to the administrators of the McNair Program. (Mentors will also provide a confidential written evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of their mentees, available only to the administrators of the McNair Program).
Financial Benefits for Students
In addition to these benefits of working with a mentor, proteges will receive a stipend of $2000.
