Junior Academic Year
Meet twice a month, or more if needed, to guide and encourage your mentee(s):
1. in identifying and achieving their overall academic goals
2. in the development of a written research proposal with a lit review, hypothesis, methodology, and plan for data collection and analysis by the end of the spring semester,
Six Weeks Summer Research Program (mid June - end of July)
1. Meet once a week, or more as needed, with the proteges) to supervise the conduct of the research, analysis of the data, and interpretation of findings.
2. Help the student prepare for a poster and an oral presentation at the end of the summer program.
Senior Academic Year
1. Continue to mentor the protege in their research projects.
2. Guide protege in choice of graduate schools to apply to and assist in application process.
3. Direct preparation of a paper for publication in the CSULB McNair Scholars Journal to be published in the spring
4. Encourage attendance and participation at professional association conferences and meetings.
5. Direct protege's participation in the Annual CSULB Research Competition held in early spring.
Evaluation
1.Mentors will keep records of dates of meetings with proteges, and turn them in to the Program at specified times.
2. At the end of each semester, mentors will provide brief evaluations of the progress of their proteges, available only to the administrators of the McNair Program.
3. (Students will also be expected to provide confidential written evaluations of their mentors, available only to the administrators of the McNair Program).
Financial Benefits to Mentors
In addition to the psychological rewards of mentoring outstanding students, mentors will receive a stipend of $750 per student for the summer program (no more than 2 students per mentor).
