Grand Canyon of Yellowstone

The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone is as its name implies: a truly grand canyon. While no where near as large as its namesake in Grand Canyon National Park, nonetheless it has other features its namesake does not, like a waterfall and several hots springs or geysers that feed the Yellowstone River

There are two scenic drives in this area, with one being a one way loop. One scenic drive takes you to a location that features a metal stairway that goes down the canyon wall almost to the river itself. The drive to Artist Point is a must. This is where I took the photo at the head of this page, using a telephoto lens. There is also a vista point at the brink of the fall where you can feel the power of the river.

A view of the Lower Falls from the Uncle Tom's Trail down to the river's edge. Across the river at the top of the falls is the overlook area. Yes, those are people on the overlook.
A view of Lower Falls from Artist Point. From here you can get a feel for the size of Lower Falls, the river and the canyon itself.
A close up view of Yellowstone River via a telephoto lens. Not readily apparent in this view are the many steaming hot springs that add water to the river. The red/brown stain is evidence of one such hot spring.
A telephoto shot of Lower Falls from Artist Point. Barely visible on the top right hand side of the falls is a lookout point. A recent 8x10 enlargement showed the people there.
At the brink of the falls from the safety of the viewpoint. There is no way to descibe the feeling of the power of the river at this point and the amount of water going over it can't be guessed by somebody born and raised in the Los Angeles area, like me.
A long shot of the canyon from another portion of the scenic drive.
