Devil's Postpile National Monument is a hidden jewel. Accessed via the Mammoth Mountain ski area, and only via bus after 7 AM (very small access road), it has campgrounds, a lake, tail heads, streams and a beautiful waterfall. The main attraction is a large formation of basalt colums that formed about 900,000 years ago (information courtesy of NPS site), but I would recommend you grab the free shuttle bus and see everything since it can be done in one day's time.
The namesake area of this National Monument. An early morning shot of the basalt columns. They actually only occupy a small portion of the entire area.
Rainbow Falls on the Devil's Postpile Trail. It was a bit of a hike for us since we started at the farther end of the valley, however this is one of the nicest waterfalls I have ever seen.

This is the lake in the middle of the monument. A hike around it will reveal a lot of changing scenery. A nice place to just sit and stare.
