According to the Newspaper Association of America newspaper daily circulation fell 2.6 percent during the past six months compared to last year, while circulation of Sunday newspapers fell 3.1 percent during the same period.

Freedom of the Press v. Trade Secrets

Judges of California's Sixth District Court of Appeals questioned lawyers on both sides of an issue pitting Apple Computers against three websites that focus on reporting about the Cupertino-based computer company. Lawyers from the Electronic Frontier Foundation, appearing on behalf of the online reporters who broke news about unreleased Apple products, argued that emails between confidential sources and reporters should be protected under the First Amendment. Conversely, Apple, Intel, and several other companies, argued that releasing such information put the companies at a competitive disadvantage.

Hurrican Katrina Coverage Nets Pulitzers

Two Gulf Coast newspapers, the Times-Picayune (New Orleans) and the Sun Herald (Gulfport, Mississippi) were awarded Pulitzer Prizes (click on "What's New") for their coverage of Hurrican Katrina and its aftermath. Other newspapers which were awarded prizes include the New York Times, the Washington Post and the Rockey Mountain News.
