Sociology Department
Master's Program

Our New Graduate Program in Sociology
The Department of Sociology is pleased to announce the approval of our M.A. program in applied sociology. The start date is FALL 2010.

Program Description
The M.A. will combine core courses in methods, theory and sociological practice with training in two thematic concentrations: Sociology of Medicine and Health and Community Development and Social Change.
The Program is designed to prepare graduates for careers in a variety of public and private organizations that require intellectual rigor and research-based decision-making and application. Specific expertise will include needs assessment and program evaluation, survey, statistical, secondary and qualitative data analysis applicable in local, national and international settings.

The curriculum will provide students with a strong theoretical and methodological foundation, with specialization in medical sociology or community development/social change. Courses focus on community development, health and illness, and the role of organizational structures and public policy in addressing contemporary social issues. Field work placements provide direct and practical experience with local public and private agencies addressing community health and social justice issues. The program will also serve as an ideal foundation for students wishing to pursue doctoral study in sociology or related disciplines.

If you have experience in community-based organizations, and/or an interest in community-global issues, and a commitment to social justice and human rights we encourage you to think about this new program.
