I was born in New York, New York on
February 11, 1969. I was raised in the Big Apple and its New Jersey
suburbs (in Matawan and Marlboro, both in Monmouth County). I went to high school in New York City at The Searing School on West 23rd Street
in Manhattan. I moved to Worcester, Massachusetts, to attend Clark University where I
majored in psychology and tripled minored in education, business management, and
criminal justice. During college, I taught eighth grade in a local
parochial school.
After college, I moved to our nation's
capitol to attend The George Washington University where I earned both a law degree and a
masters in forensic science. During my time in D.C., I worked for several
law firms, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and St. Elizabeth's
Hospital.
In 1993, I moved to Scottsdale, Arizona. I worked in the
federal court system in Phoenix, Arizona, as the judicial law clerk to The Honorable
Stephen M. McNamee, United States District Judge for the District of Arizona. I also
taught the law-related components of an interdisciplinary justice studies program at
Arizona State University's School of Justice Studies from 1993-1997. While teaching there,
I earned a Ph.D. in Justice Studies from ASU and practiced law part-time, specializing in
criminal law and estate planning. Upon completion of my doctorate, I began working as an assistant professor of law and
justice at The College of New Jersey ("TCNJ") in Ewing, N.J. I was tenured
and promoted to the rank of associate professor of in 2001. In January of 2007,
I was promoted to the rank of Professor of Law, Criminology, and
Justice Studies at TCNJ. In the summer of 2007, I resigned from TCNJ and
accepted an appointment as a Professor in and Chair of the Department of
Criminal Justice at California State University, Long Beach.
