About the Program

Hospitality Foodservice and Hotel Management program is offered as a Bachelor of Science Degree option in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at California State University, Long Beach. The major is designed to prepare students with the necessary background and expertise for entry level management positions in this exciting and growing field. The program provides the fundamentals to excel as managers and leaders in the restaurant, foodservice, hotel and lodging industries. The curriculum offers a broad-based foundation in both academic and professional courses and includes hands-on practical experience. A Minor in Hospitality Foodservice and Hotel Management is also offered through this academic program area for those students wishing to expand and/or augment their programs of study.
 

Special Features of the Program

The Hospitality Foodservice and Hotel Management program is housed in the Family and Consumer Sciences Building, featuring foodservice labs/kitchens, state-of-the-art computer facilities, and banquet and meeting rooms. Students enjoy the option to participate in various extracurricular activities plus have many opportunities for work expertise and job placement in the surrounding geographical area. The program is partnered with the Educational Foundation of the National Restaurant Association, and offers the nationally recognized Professional Management Development Program (ProMgmt). California State University, Long Beach has a chapter of Eta Sigma Delta, the international honor society for students in hospitality management.

Graduates with this major can find work as a: restaurant manager, hotel manager, catering director, front office manager, foodservice manager in a college, university, or corporate setting, manager of a motel or bed and breakfast facility, food and beverage director, healthcare hospitality foodservice director, school foodservice director, airline foodservice manager, manager in senior nutrition programs, stadiums or amusement parks, or as a food purchaser or broker. Obtaining experience in the industry helps create a competitive advantage and aids in more rapid advancement.

Course of Study 

Major: This program of study provides students with a basic foundation in hospitality foodservice and hotel management. A variety of support courses are required including those related to behavioral and social sciences, business administration, communications, leisure studies, nutrition, economics, as well as other general education requirements and practical experience. Students must complete a minimum of 126 units to receive the B.S. degree with a major in Hospitality Foodservice and Hotel Management. Some of the courses required for this degree option may also satisfy General Education Requirements.(Degree Code: FCS_BS03)


Minor: The minor in Hospitality Foodservice and Hotel Management requires 22 units for completion. Students need to refer to the CSULB catalog and meet with an academic advisor to determine specific graduation requirements. (Minor Code: FCS_UM05)

Fees and Financial Assistance

Fees and tuition to attend CSULB vary depending on resident vs. nonresident status, and whether attending full or part time. Many opportunities for financial aid, general scholarships and fellowships are available through the Office of Financial Aid.
